Macular degeneration (AMD) is a disease that affects the most sensitive part of the retina called the macula. The macula is used for reading, detailed near vision, and straight-ahead distance vision. This age-related deterioration of the macula is the number one cause of blindness in Caucasians over 65 years of age. Anti-oxidant “AREDS” vitamins with zinc have been shown in some cases to slow down disease progression of the “dry” form but do not reverse established vision loss. The “wet” form of AMD is less common than the “dry” form and can sometimes be treated with laser and, more recently, with injections that retard the growth and leakage of abnormal blood vessels.
