Dry eye is a very common progressive condition that can affect people of all ages. It is more commonly seen in older people, and women are more commonly affected than are men.
Symptoms often include itching, burning, irritation, and (paradoxically) watery eyes - worse during dry seasons. The tear quantity may seem adequate or even excessive, but the quality and lubricating ability may be reduced.
A variety of generalized autoimmune conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis and lupus are associated with dry eyes. Diuretics, antidepressants, birth control pills, and antihistamines may aggravate a dry eye condition.
Initial therapy commonly consists of using artificial tears. Tear contact with the eye surface can by enhanced by blocking the tear drains with plugs. The effect of temporary absorbable plugs lasting weeks or months can be evaluated prior to placing permanent (removable if necessary) non-absorbable silicone plugs.
Nutritional supplements such as flax seed oil enjoy increasing popularity.
Restasis (cyclosporine A) is a prescription eye drop that helps increase the production of your natural tears.
